05. HMD meme
All of us have those moments where we are uncertain about our characterization. Sometimes feedback is the best medicine! So, step on up and post your roleplay accounts and the games you have them in. Let others come by and tell you how you're doing and let others know what you think! Give legitimate reasons and not just "I love you!" Save that for our monthly love memes.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 01:59 am (UTC)(link)The only character I have a critique on is Isaac, despite my lack of knowledge on the canon itself. My biggest critique is how much stretching you've done to seemingly make him fit inside the realms of Luceti. It shows, a little bit, that you're not entirely comfortable with him. That being said, some of what he does IC grates on other characters by more than a healthy amount.
Daylight strangling is tricky. Powering over another character can't just be threaded out. Talking with the other player's mundane beforehand is a major must in order to keep away from godmoding, as well as figuring out what they're even comfortable with happening. Additionally, you can't just have a character do something that is socially (by most standards) unacceptable in the middle of town in the afternoon. There are too many characters that wouldn't stand for that, and by threading it out in that setting, you're blocking out a lot of interrupting that clearly would have happened otherwise.
Mostly, you need to sit down and figure out whether or not they're right for the game. If their main goal is to kill everyone and everything, that ain't gonna fly. We've got plenty of baddies up in this game, but they don't go around stomping on everyone. Give him a fixed goal. That'll help loads. Or look at some of the other classic 'bads' that are floating around the game. We had a Ganondorf, there was a Grell Sutcliff (a death god, for cryin' out loud!) that did this really well, and Starscream is in there too. If it helps, imagine if Darth Vader apped and got accepted tomorrow. Kill them all and build a galactic empire? Maybe the latter. He definitely wouldn't go around chokeholding everyone in sight.
Another thing to consider: if a character puts you outside your comfort zones in just roleplaying them, they may not be the character for you. It's one thing if your character does things that you wouldn't, and you write it. It's another thing if you can't write it comfortably. Just something to think about.

I'd like to mention that I did communicate once or twice with the mun while the thread was underway (this is probably not very clear from the looks of the interaction,) although it is possible I did not do so enough - and if that is the case, I do apologize.
About your second point - Isaac, cursed as he is and especially cruel and mad at his current canon point, knows his power and feels like he can get away with terrorizing people. Luceti is just another village, to him. That said, I entirely understand what you mean about the blocking, and in retrospect, the way in which I approached that thread wasn't very good at all. Not an excuse, but the simple fact of the matter is I probably got too carried away with the dialogue and the description to notice this big error I was committing. Someone else pointed it out to me, too, so I will be especially mindful of this in the future.
Indeed, I have been thinking about what I'd like to do with Isaac and whether he fits into the game. I know that his goal, at his current canon point, is to carry out his master's work which is just... not feasible. :I Like you said, it just won't work with him going about being all aggressive if someone "dares" to challenge his arrogant self. So I've actually thought about changing his canon-point as soon as March instead of dropping him - I'd want to give it a shot, at least, and see how it goes. The change would lift his curse and make him much less crazy and physically aggressive, to say the least, and I feel like there would be more room for development with him (a gradual process, though). What I most like about him is that he makes me laugh with his sass and flamboyant flirting rather than his violent tendencies, which is another reason why the canon point change would work well, I'd think.
After meme-ing around with him and bumping into castmates, I find that I'm definitely more comfortable writing him when people are familiar with his canon, because then I don't feel so afraid of offending. That's mostly what worries me - the thought of accidentally triggering, or something to that effect, despite offering little warnings in subject lines and what have you. But yes.
Sorry about the huge read, but I just wanted to let you know that I acknowledge your points and that Iappreciate you having left me this message. Isaac's the first villain I've played seriously, and I'm grateful for the help.
Peace!
